Apple’s “fun” announcement. Wasn’t much fun.

There were 3 letdowns, which is kinda impressive since there were 3 products released.

Mac mini

Same style, not impressive anymore. Faster processor, expected. From the looks of it they gutted the video card. From what little I’ve read, the new graphics chipset is good for motion video – bad for anything else. (Great, they make a weak attempt at the livingroom by dropping the ball elsewhere.) Plus to top it off they’re using shared memory with system RAM. Always a good idea. (Not.) The one, count it, one, bright side is that they now have optical in and out. Throwing a bone to the people who want this in their home theater. Last, but not least, they raised the price. Yay!

iPod Hi-Fi

What is the point of this? Sure, it’s an impressive block of speaker, and for that price it should sound good. But really. Really. What the hell? $400+ and it doesn’t even have a radio??? Who in their right mind would even think about filling that thing up with batteries? If I want “audiophile” sound, I’m not going to use a iTunes download to begin with. And I just want to pluck the blister of an iPod off the top of the thing. Hum-bug.

iPod Leather case

In the words of one Homer J. Simpson:

They saw an overcrowded market and said “Me Too!”.

Sweet Merciful Father! A $99 leather slip?!?! You can’t even access the touch wheel. I’m not sure if this is better or worse then the nano “band-aid” arm band.

Man… I hope the Origami thing from Microsoft is better then this.

One day it all disappeared

I had a dream that my house was on fire
People laughed while it burned

I tried to run but my legs were numb
I had to wait til the feeling returned

I don’t need a doctor to figure it out
I know what’s passing me by

Big Smile

X-ray of my teeth before I had my wisdom teeth pulled. The tooth on the farthest to the left on bottom had actually hollowed itself out and a point had broken off. More info on the flickr page for it.

Newton’s Apple: Falling Down

Monday, February 27th, 2006

So, photo of the Video iPod wasn’t real.

That’s strike one.

Think Secret says iBoombox. Big deal. It’s suppose to offer “unique” features that no one else has. I’m guessing at most it’ll offer a wireless connection to the PC. Which should have been around by now anyway’s. I’d love to have the iPod charging without having it tied to the computer desk. But the idea of a mini stereo system (’cause now that the new iPod remote handles radio, this will too) just isn’t appealing in the least.

Strike two.

Then there’s the plausible full movie downloads. *snore* I’m not going to “buy” your DRM low bit-rate music, so I’m definitely not going to buy your DRM movies. And God knows what else will be done to limit them.

Steee-rike Three!

So is there a saving grace to all this? Possibly. Along with the movie downloads there’s talk that the Mac mini will be released as well. If the two do coincide then perhaps Apple is ready to step into the living room. Which could be a good sign.

But it won’t matter a hill of beans to me. There’s no way I can get both a mini and a iBook, so I’ll still have to wait things out. Maybe the iBook will be released as well? Interesting. Less then a day to go!

Public Access Televison

Monday, February 27th, 2006

The US National Archives has teamed up with Google Video to present films from their library.

This is wonderful and upsetting.  All this information should be available to the public at large, and it’s long overdue.  But do you really want it provided by Google?

Granted, somebody has to pay for the bandwidth and what not, but partnering with just one company feels wrong.  The press release states that it’s a non-exclusive deal, but I’ll feel better when there’s a second source.

If it was the only way, I’d be happy with Library and Archives Canada to hook up with Google.  Just as long as it was available to everyone.

CBC has a similar resource, but they’re using Windows Media to stream the videos, which is ugly.  But at least it’s not as bad as the RealVideo they were using before.  I think part of the problem is that at the moment a lot of the CBC’s archive is still under copyright and they just can’t provide a link to download the media.

It would be cool for all these services to offer support for DemocracyAnything that gets people to experience this stuff.

Check out the great shirts these guys are wearing!  If CBC were selling them now I would so buy one!

Dichotomy

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

di chot o my (di–ko(t’?-me-) pronunciation
Division into two usually contradictory parts or opinions: “the dichotomy of the one and the many”

The Olympics are over. It’s so strange, I love the Olympics, yet I’m so dispassonate about sports. I wouldn’t say I hate sports, but I’m pretty apathetic towards it as a concept. Like most things I look at it from the posistion of an outsider. I don’t really know the history for most of it so I keep asking “Why?”.

But not just why are the rules the way they are, but “Why the hell do you want to do this in the first place?”. I mean seriously. Why do people care so much how fast someone can ski down a hill? Why aren’t there compititions for climbing the hill? What is the practical difference?

If you take a step back and really look at it, doesn’t it all seem a little silly? I mean, why couldn’t you have an Olympic medal in snowball fights? It’s just as sensable, really.

One difference between gold and silver this Olympics was seperated by 0.01 seconds. Think about it. How stupid is that? Is that little of a difference even statistically important? The claim that Olympic gold represents “Best in the World” is almost laughable. Maybe I don’t understand the nature of sport (which is more then a valid claim) but it just seems too arbitrary when the difference is so little and the varibles are uncontrolled. A gust of wind at the right time would be enough to push someone from silver to gold. How is that fair?

Perhaps I take things too literally

But ignoring that for now, I’m still an Olympic junkie. I’m the type of person who would take off the 16 days and sit in front of a wall of televisions soaking up as much of it as I could.

I’m funny like that. :-)

I’m too tired to spell-check tonight, suffer. ;)

[Listening to: Not Ready to Go by The Trews off the album Going the Distance (3:02)]

The ultimate Olympics song. CBC played this over a retrospect of the 2004 Athen’s summer games at their closing and it’s forever tied with the Olympics for me.

Atlas Shrugged

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

Last night before starting a movie I felt the room shake. At first I thought it was just a large transport truck driving by, but there wasn’t the customary roar of the engine as it downshifts, and nothing else could be heard over the general traffic noise.

The picture frames on the wall where shacking slightly which was a little odd. And I stood up to look out the window but it seemed to be over after I got to my feet.

I’ve never experienced an earthquake before, I’ve been told they’ve happened here before but it’s either been too weak for me to notice or I’ve been asleep, so I wasn’t quite sure if it acutally was one.

CBC’s report.

From the Rock to the Top of the World

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

That’s how CBC described it in there little video montage.

Brad Gushue (pronouned “Goo-Shoe”) of St. John’s, Newfoundland (My Hometown!) has won GOLD in Curling at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Hot Damn.

George St. wil be lit up tonight.

Tiki God

Don’t ask me how but the tiki found bobby
He thought the idol was some hawaiian hobby
Turned out the God was mean and vicious
Didn’t respond to bobby’s 3 wishes

It’s been a Tiki Week.

Golden Delicious

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Apple is having another press conference on the 28th and rumors are flying. There are the traditional ones such as the iTablet and the Video iPod. These have been spurred on by recent patent applications by Apple for touchscreen interfaces. And now comes another secret shot of a preproduction model for the Video iPod which is kinda convincing, at least compared to all the fakes that sprout up at these sort of things.

All that and so far I’m not impressed. Lets be honest, a Video iPod is going to be stupid expensive. The 30 Gig iPod is just too damn much as it is and that’s without the full size LCD and the processing power necessary for the touchscreen display. It’s kinda like a new sports car coming out, hey it looks cool, but even if I have the money for it, I still can’t afford it. So it’s kinda of a non-issue. I’d like the price of the 4 Gig Nano to come down to something reasonable as well. Maybe they’ll bump the sizes to bring us back to where we were with the iPod Mini. (I probably won’t get a nano until it can store as much as a mini.)

What I really want is for the iBook to finally go live. I want it cheap and I want it durable. The rumor is that it’s going to be a 13inch widescreen which could be nice. It’ll still be small and the wide format will make the keyboard fit better. I’m wondering if they’re going to include the iSight in the el cheapo iBooks too. It’d be a nice feature to add, but since they charge close to $200 for the iSight in stores it’s not exactly the way to go to keep costs down. basically, the iBook will be a neutered version of the MacBook Pro (oh for the love of all that is Good and Holy, why did they call it a MacBook? Ugly, ugly name.) which means they have to wow us with form factor or piss everyone off that bought a MacBook. Which wouldn’t be good. But that’s the beauty of the Mac loyalist, they can never stay mad. ;)

Of the established brands, what can we expect to see???? iMac and ProBook (MUCH better name) have already been updated and are unlikely to get even at most a speed bump. Which leaves the iBook (so we take a ProBook fetus and add alcohol to the gestation tank, viola!), Mac Mini and PowerMac.

The PowerMac (will they want to drop the “Power” since they’re no longer using the PowerPC?? Will they call it a MacMac?? I’m guessing “Mac Pro”.) is unlikely I think as those that use it don’t really care until all the apps (PHOTOSHOP!) are ported to Intel. Which leaves the Mac Mini.

Rumors state that the Mini is getting an overhaul, but nothing I’ve read so far seems to indicate that Apple is willing to admit that these things truly belong in the livingroom. The Mini is the perfect block against Microsoft’s Media Center, but Apple keeps dodging the question like a Bush press secretary. The mythical built-in iPod connector has supposedly been stripped out at the last minuet which just doesn’t make sense as there are many people who would buy it for that feature alone.

My guess is that his is going to be a one or two product introduction. April 1st will be Apple’s 30th anniversary as a company and I’m betting they’ll want to save the best stuff for that. Sooo….. The iBook is a real contender since it won’t have the wow of a ProBook. But the invitation hints at “fun” which calls the iPod as the big deal. Plus that gives Steve the chance to brag come 04/01 about how many have been sold by then.

Truth be told, no one really knows what’s going to happen. But it’s Apple and they set the bar propoganda pretty high so if I’m not wow’ed, I’m not happy. Oh, and I have to stay wow’ed. Once the Reality Distortion Field evaporates, I still want to think it’s cool.
