Canadian Tire Fire

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

Sounds like a Jeopardy question, or is that an answer?

On our way to Rona today to buy paint and stuff we were passing Canadian Tire on Coventry Rd. Just as I turned off of the Vanier Parkway I saw thick black smoke pouring over the Lynx baseball field. Something in the Canadian Tire garage had caught serious fire. It was just pouring out what looked like a hole in the roof. There were some people in the garage entrance and while they looked concerned, they didn’t seem to panic. So I guess things looked worse then they actually were.

And on Saturday, I was driving down Walkley road when the bus that was one car ahead of me had an explosion in it’s engine. There was this big puff of dirt out of the bottom and th back engine cover sorta lifted up a little bit and then the bus slowed to a stop. I, of course, suspected Terrorist Attack and held my breath till I was clear of the area. Which, with the traffic backup probably wasn’t the best idea as I almost passed out behind the wheel. I’m just going to have to keep a gas mask in the car at all times. :-)

If I only had a brain name.

I want a Name, damn it.

I don’t just want an address. I want a place. Ian Fleming had Goldeneye. Why the hell can’t my house have a name?

Since we get the keys on May 1st, I decided to look up that date. Besides the obvious May Day (and I’m not that gung-ho on labour politicts) this is what relates to May 1st:

But there are three other things which caught my eye. The first was Walpurgis Night, which is a festival in parts of mostly Northern Europe either on the April 30th or May 1st. It’s kinda a bonfire night of sorts with Pagen roots. That name is kinda dumb, but linked from that page is Brocken bow. Which is a really cool effect, and a pretty cool name.

Welcome to Brocken Bow.

Could be worse.

The second one is a interesting Roman goddess named Bona Dea who had a public festival on May 1st as well. Much like everything else, it was all related to spring and the hopes of a good harvest. It’s a pretty name and it sounds kinda impressive and stylish.

You’re invited for an evening at Bona Dea.

Calls for a Toga party tho.

My current favorite is Beltane It’s a Gaelic celebration on May 1st to welcome the coming of spring. It’s Irish, it’s the right date, it’s Wicca/Magic related (which is a nice fit with the cat’s names), it serves as the roots of the happy side of May Day and it sounds cool.

Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Beltane!

Now that’s awesome. :)

I guess I’ll have to get a May Pole too.

Blood not required

If I managed to time this post correctly I am, at this moment, signing the papers to my first house.

Even though I will be in the vile lair of a lawyer I am assured that my signature will need nothing more then standard blue ink. No opening of a vein to satisfy this deal with the devil!
Yay!

Hollywood has grossly misrepresented how Satan signs his contracts.

“Unit” is appropriate

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

“Unit” is slang for something else.

The Unit” is a CBS “action/drama” which stars a military team on CBS. And I swear the writers have an American flag up their collective butts. It’s just that bad. It’s almost comical. Watching it is like being warped back to the 80′s with higher production values.

The Unit is The A-Team as invisioned by right-wing neoconservatives. I’m surprised that more stuff doesn’t blow up because it looks purdy.

The nicest thing I can say about it is that they spend a lot of money on it. Otherwise it looks like a Simpson’s nationalism joke come to life. (“USA! USA!“)

It’s no surprise that it comes from CBS, the network which brought us the show I dispise most: Touched by an Angel.

To kick off a television category, I should have started with my feelings on that particular show but what comes out when I try to rant about it is not much more then a guttural scream of fury.

But much like Touched by an Angel, The Unit flat out lies to people.

NO ONE on Touched by an Angel actually accomplished anything, 45 min’s of buildup leads to Deus Ex Machina solving everything without anything actually being done. The Unit makes lies about the totality of American influence and what can only be described as Bush’s New American Century. (Ok, so it’s not technically Bush’s, but do you really think that matters?)

God, I should stop right here before I waste too much of my time…. this show just isn’t worth it, but it’s going to be a hit. :-(

Show us your Tats!

Super cool tattoo. Made from UV-reactive ink so it only shows up under a blacklight.

UV Tattoo

The only problem is that besides the x-ray look, I can’t think of another tattoo style that wouldn’t benefit a stripper. So you can see that I’m strongly interested in seeing this technology developed further. :-D

More pictures.

Animated Thinker

Monday, April 24th, 2006

From PersonalDNA.com, my “true self” is a Animated Thinker.

Whatever the hell that is suppose to be.

To make it cool and hip they add in these little graphics to look pretty.

Apparently I have no “agency” so I guess I believe in fate. But I also have little confidence and I’m a pessimist so I guess I only believe in bad fates. You can get my unique breakdown here.

For those of you who care, you can “Psych you / Psych Me“.

The big problem is that none of the answers were right for me in many cases… I’m a little too variable.

Right Thing (as in Do the Right Thing) noun:
The inevitable choice which you knowingly will regret greatly later.

Old Money

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

Dad called today to tell me about a call he had recieved.

Someone was looking for him over a policy my grandfather had taken out at least 40 years ago. They were never informed of his passing and someone who knew him at the company stumbled across the paperwork. It’s a little over $2000 and will be split between me and my cousin Chris. (Nathan’s only grandsons.)

I’m not sure what to do with the money. Tho I’m under strict orders from Mom not to spend it on camera gear. :)

The last time I inherrieted money like this I bought my first real camera. The Canon G3. And that pretty much changed my life. I’d like to use this money in sort of the same way. I’d like to get something that I’ll have for a long time. Or at least to open up new life-long interests. It’s silly to say it’s to remember Poppy, but it kinda is.

But we do need a couch.

I’ve got some time to think it over, it’ll be at the very least a few weeks before the paperwork gets done.

Wild Friday Night

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Where do all the hip cats hang out on a Friday night???

Did you say Sears Home???

I sure hope not!

But that’s where I spent my wild and crazy Friday night. We bought all of our appliances. Over $4000 taxes included. (CDN, $3.95 US) Harper, where the hell is that GST reduction you were talking about?? I could have actually used that.

They’re not exactly cream of the crop, but we didn’t go ghetto with them. I think we should be pretty happy with them. We tried to make sure that we could get the best EnergyStar numbers that we could afford. It might not mean that much right now, but over the lifetime of the products it could save us a bit of money… more so if energy prices rise as well. Tho I really hope they don’t.

God… I’m almost sounding like an adult or something. And we all know that that hasn’t happened yet.

One week till we sign the last of the papers.

10 days till we get the keys.

Less then a month till we move in.
