The N-Word.

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Sorcha posted a video to the Facebook page. It’s a clip from ABC about all the planes landing in Gander after Sept. 11.

And I don’t think they pronounce Newfoundland correctly once throughout the whole thing! Here’s the simple rule of thumb for proper pronunciation:

In Newfoundland we all like to have a good time so -

New-Fun-Land

Just like that. Newfunland. Not NewFinland, not Newfoundlind, or even the understandable Newfoundland. (They always seem to drag out the found.)

I’m not even going to get started on that other N-Word.

You will soon win the big prize.

But it’s never the prize you really want.

Just remember, he walks away.

When we were walking home from the bus stop this afternoon there was a young puppy running down the opposite side of the street. An older woman was chasing after him yelling something along the lines of “Stop!”. It might have been in French, I’m not sure.

The puppy thought this was a game. He’d stop or slow down, wait for her to start to get close and then run off again.

This was kinda scary as while the puppy kept to the side of the road there were cars coming in both directions. Some cars on our side actually stopped and pulled over just in case. Others who got off the bus at the same stop were walking up that side of the street tried to get the puppy to come to them.

Only he wanted to keep playing. So the little gray puppy darted out into the street.

In front of a oncoming little gray car.

I don’t know how the woman driving didn’t notice the stopped cars, the gathered people, or the obvious gray doggy against the green grass on the side of the road. Maybe some people just get tunnel vision when they drive. (I am seriously jinxing myself with that…)

Now, she did hit the breaks. Not soon enough, but she did use them.

I am thankful beyond words that I couldn’t actually see anything because of the stopped minivan. Regardless I turned away and shut my eyes tight. Anita actually let out a small scream at the dull thud and the screech of the tires.

This was one of those moments where seconds are suppose to feel like hours.

I’ve got to be honest, I lied before. He didn’t walk away.

Before I could have a moment to imagine the horror of what lay behind the minivan out pops this little gray bullet. No longer playing, but not sure what to do, he ran back up the street from the direction he had come.

The woman who had been chasing him was kinda lost. I think she was dumbfounded that he was still moving. The woman who was driving the minivan said she’d get him and tore off up the street. Those who were trying to catch the puppy were talking and, I assume, comforting the owner.

We continued up the street till we saw the minivan woman walking back down the street with the puppy in her arms.

With nothing left that we could do we headed home. The woman driving the car hadn’t really moved for a while but as everyone gradually dispersed she slowly drove away.

I could do with less days like this.

Auto-Update to 2.3

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I upgraded the site to WordPress 2.3 this evening. I’ve been putting off updates because, quite frankly, it scared the hell out of me. One of the reasons I picked Yahoo for my hosting was, besides being big enough I felt I could trust it to just work, that it had a auto-installer for WordPress. At the time I was under the impression that Yahoo would also keep the installation updated. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

I recently found out about a plugin which does the WordPress update for you. Which, in my opinion, should be built into future versions of WordPress. In fact, I think it would be a good idea of the plugin’s could be updated from within WordPress system as well.

Everything worked well but I got some nasty looking error messages when it tried to update the database. Everything works tho, so I’m happy.

Now, the plan is to get a new theme for the site. The newer versions of WordPress support a dynamic sidebar and it’s a lot easier to change around. But the theme has to support it. I should be able to edit the current one but that’s a little too much effort for me. :-)

I’ve searched through 20 pages of theme’s and these are the ones I like so far:

They all follow the same sort of look, which is also similar to the current theme. I’d like to customize the theme to make it “my own”, but I pretty much just want to change the picture files. I’ll have to test these out when I get some time.

ONE BILLION!!!!

Happy One Billion Seconds to me,
Happy One Billion Seconds to me,
Happy One Billion Seconds to Wayne,
Happy One Billion Seconds to me!
And here’s to One Billion more! (Friday, June 3, 2039 at 8:33:20 AM. Be there or be square.)

T-Minus and Counting.

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Way back in my 29th year I counted down every day till I hit 30. It was important to me. Life is not a game, you don’t get to play through it a second time and I wanted to wake my youth.

This guy gives, from the sobering viewpoint of mid-life, a justification to countdown what we have left. The general idea being that when you know a resource is limited you take better care of it.

I keep getting the feeling that I’m “going through the motions”. Like a slot car racer just following the groove around the track. So I started following the steps and learned I should die sometime around September 8, 2052. It’s a Sunday.

Granted, this stuff can’t be that accurate, but for my age (31) I have somewhere around 44.96 years left to go. And they’re not all going to be good years.

After I had punched in the numbers I played around with the Birthday Calculator and found out that I turn 1 Billion seconds old – tomorrow!

How “timely” is that? :-)

What a wonderful smell you’ve discovered!

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Tonight we’ve been getting this weird chemical smell in certain rooms of the house. It’s kinda like glue or paint or varnish….. or maybe melting plastic…

Star Wars quotes aside, we’ve spent a good part of the evening sniffing around the place like bloodhounds trying to find out just what the hell is going on. Checking everything that’s plugged in. Is it too warm? Is it actually hot?

We can’t find anything that should be causing it.

My only guess is next door. They’ve been doing a lot of work on their main floor and Anita heard a noise from that side earlier today. The theory goes like this – that noise could have been the sound of the floors being redone. And whatever gets spread over the floors afterwards would stink to high-heaven. Our walls and roof are joined so the theory continues with the fumes bleeding through the joints.

The thing is, I’m not sure if that’s suppose to happen?? But nothing else makes sense.

What else could come through the walls? Carbon Monoxide?

And…. touchdown.

I’m back in the Nation’s Capital with 2000+ pictures totaling around 6+ Gig’s of data. (Of course that includes Joseph filling up a 1 Gig card all on his own.)

Good times.

Anne-Marie took stellar care of my little kittens. For almost two weeks!! As far as I’m concerned – she’s family now.

Not only are my cats that important to me, they’ll just that much trouble.

Still tho’, I’m going to have to do something big to make this up! :)

The Jipper Wedding.

It’s 94.6 Km to Spaniard’s Bay,
We got fully charged batteries,
3 Gig’s of film,
A Laptop,
And there’s Moose on the Highway.

Hit it.

And…. liftoff!

My plane should be taking off right about……. now!
