Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it

John Mayer‘s song “Waiting for the World to Change” depresses the hell out of me.

It feels like it’s a “re-imaging” of a 60′s protest song. And that’s what sticks in my throat. Hippies, Woodstock, Flower Power and irrational manifestos. All of this was suppose to have changed the world already.

Now John is pretty much saying we’re back where we started.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

But the very worse is the chorus: “So we’re going to keep on waiting, waiting for the world to change

What the hell is that? Where’s the call to rally? The direction, the purpose, the “We can change things.”

It’s “Yeah man, it’s a shame. But what are you gonna do? Um.. You gonna finish that joint?”

Almost as if what’s the point of trying, we’ll be back here sooner or later.

Those that study history are doomed to know they are repeating it.

BetteActually

In loveactually, part of the plot involves a washed up singer remaking a old hit into Christmas song to cash in.

Well, life imitates art.

Bette Midler has release a Christmas album. And, just to follow the script, she’s remade From a Distance into a Christmas song.

Seriously, the song is just bad.

It’s just so damn in your face about being a crude re-hashing for money. I’ve never liked Bette Midler, but I don’t think I can even look at her now without thinking ‘corporate call girl‘.

Shelf Selection

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

So it turns out the HMV gift cards only work in the retail stores and not in their online store. So Birdy Nam Nam wasn’t an option. And no matter how much I like Lemon Jelly, $30+ is too much for a CD.

In that case I turned my attentions to what was in stock and ended up with DJ Shadow The Outsider and Kid Koala Your Mom’s Favorite DJ.

I’ve only given each a brief listen but both albums are ok. The Outsider relies on guest MC’s a little too much but most of the tracks seem to have good rhythm (and a few have some crazy weird beats). The Kid Koala album is what I’ve generally come to expect from him. So close to greatness but he zigs where I would have liked him to zag. But I always find myself appreciating the effort and feeling like I’m letting him down by not appreciating it enough.

The only truly annoying part is that the entire album is only 2 tracks, each over 15 min’s long. (And a 3rd 5 second track) The liner notes (which are always fun to read with Koala) explain how it harks back to his original demo tape and it’s two 15 min sides.

But honestly, I don’t really care. It’s 2006 and track numbers could have been used to break up the songs without having to make a gap. Plus the gap is there between most already! I’ve going to have to try and find time to split the tracks up myself. Or maybe I can just download them pre split for me.

I also picked up a use copy of OutKast‘s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Every time I see a OutKast video I’m impressed with them but I didn’t know where to start with their albums. I really enjoy Hey Ya so this seemed like the best choice. I hope it doesn’t let me down.

Birdy Nam Nam or Lemon Jelly?

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

I got some HMV gift cards for my birthday back in January and I figure I better use them before they decide to render the cards null and void and just keep the cash. (Does that seem like a scam to anyone else???)

I like to pick things up that you can’t come across that easily if I can. (Even more so if I’m going to buy it new.) And I’m stuck between Birdy Nam Nam and Lemon Jelly.

I found out about BNN through MOG and since that day their website has always been in one of my Firefox tabs so I can listen to the tracks on their site. I figure it’s time that I cut their bandwidth bills a little and just buy the damn thing.

But, there’s also the Lemon Jelly album. I have their KY CD and it’s currently #5 on my Last.fm listing. (Mog-O-Matic has never worked right for me and I’ve given up on it.)

So as far as I can tell. Both rock. What am I to do?

How you remember the 70’s

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006

I first came across Boards of Canada when I was bored around Canada Day and typed in “Canada” into Napster or some other P2P app. Since then, I’ve bought virtually every album they still have in release.

I’ve tried to describe BoC to others but Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) or Ambiant just doesn’t seem right.

The best description that’s come to me so far is: It’s how you remember the 70’s feeling.

It doesn’t really matter what it was actually like, this is how you remember it, for those of you who can. ;-)

I’m continually blown away by BoC. It is the perfect music for late summer nights when you just want to chill in the dark.

No Fear.

‘No Fear’.

Now a hopefully forgotten brand of clothing from the 90’s and my musicial philosophy.

Do Not be afraid of music you like. Still like New Kids on the Block? Then sing it loud, sing it proud.

Do Not be afraid to listen to something different. Music favors the bold.

I pretty much signed up to see what differences MOG offers over Last.fm. ( http://www.last.fm/user/WiwiJumbo/ ) I’m going to try to run these concurrently for a while (maybe continously) and see what happens.
