FauxNews

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Long story, short.  He answered the God Damn question.

I purposely avoid FoxNews as much as possible.  There’s a long standing Internet tradition: “Don’t feed the trolls!“  And I think it applies here.  Any second you waste on FoxNews is just going to encourage them.

I hear about the ethically questionable stuff that FoxNews pulls, but it’s just brutal when you see it first hand.  I was looking up the Joe Biden interview where the question is so stupid he actually asks “Is this a joke?” and I stumbled across this:

They cut the clip exactly after the “Is this a joke?” part and make it seem like that was it.  That that was the the only response.  Then the “good’ol boy” rants about how its so disgraceful.  But this is FoxNews, so I decided to look up the actual interview:

He answers the question.  He answers all the questions.  Regardless of what you think of the answers, he did give him – to try to imply otherwise is just deceitful.

This is why I avoid FoxNews.

Daily Show going soft?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I thought tonights Daily Show was kinda weak.  Jon Stewart has never hid his support of Obama, but the coverage of the Wright controversy feels more like blatant campaigning.

What’s suppose to be satire to put a rational point of view about the whole thing feels more like they’re just pulling punches to spin this for Obama.  I don’t think they’d do that for anyone else.

I trust the Daily Show for honest political news more then anything else – ’cause it’s earned it.  I understand that it has a liberal point of view, but it usually cuts through all the rhetoric to point out just how funny/sad the truth really is.

But tonight caused doubt in me and I’m a little disappointed with that.

One Spouse Too Many

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I was flipping through the channels the other night and happened to pause on Mike Duffy Live when I heard the phrase “activist judges“.

Usually when something like that is espoused by a talking head you’re about to get some Right-Wing nut job rant. Unfortunately, the guy on screen wasn’t really coherent to explain what exactly the topic that was being discussed before I got bored with him.

All that was being mumbled had something to do with police being afraid to prosecute polygamists in B.C. for fear that “activist judges” might make it legal.

There’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.

-Trudeau

Well… why is it illegal?

I’m not a fan of polygamy, and I’m not endorsing it. (My God, can you imagine two sets of in-laws??? *shudder*) But if you have three (or, I guess, possibly more) consenting adults, what right does the state have to say: No!

And consenting adult is the key there. Many against gay marriage protested with rhetoric such that if homosexuals were allowed to wed, then you’d have to allow pedophiles to marry children or let people marry their pets. If this is the kind of logic they follow no wonder they think the earth is only 6,000 years old.

Granted, many of the polygamists communities I’ve heard about it’s more coerced then consenting but I’m not sure if that’s enough to actually outlaw it.

The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins.

- Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

Things are outlawed not just when something is harmful to a person, but also when that person becomes a danger to others. Getting drunk isn’t illegal, drunk driving is. Smoking isn’t illegal but second-hand smoke is harmful to others hence the tighter and tighter restrictions on that. Not only does the drug addict waste his own life, he usually ends up threatening somebody else’s.

I haven’t researched this, I don’t have all the facts, if someone has a credible argument as to why polygamy is harmful then by all means, lock’em all up. But I’m not sure I see one from where I stand right now.

C-10

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

People are screaming over over the C-10 bill that will allow the government to withhold any funding (and can anything Canadian be made without GoC money??) if the resulting film isn’t acceptable.

And if I understand things right it doesn’t get judged one way or another until after the film is made…  So once you’re finished then your money can be pulled from you.

Steve’s a jerk.

I’ve sent a email about it to my duly elected representative.  Have you?

(But on the bright side, I did find a YouTube clip of one of my favorite Kids in the Hall sketches on the facebook group!)

“There will be no nuclear accident.”

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

I swear to God, he’s calling down the thunder with this one.

Anita told me about this when she was reading the news.  Politicians are overriding the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s opinion that the Chalk River nuclear reactor should stay closed until it’s safe.

Yes, it’s terrible that the isotopes aren’t there for the medical scans, but this is the sort of thing that’s just not suppose to happen.

Seriously, it’s the sort of the thing your read about happening in the USSR during the Cold War.

How about we do something different?  How about we not throw caution to the wind.  How about we not put all our eggs in one basket.  How about we not run a nuclear power plant which isn’t safe and have a backup for times like these.

Yes, I imagine that it wouldn’t be cheap, but it would be responsible.

I can’t wait to vote these idiots out.
